Chicks & Chickens

The highlight of last year's kindergarten class (this year's 1st grade class) at St. Pius V School was hatching chicks. The class said they missed the chicks and asked their teacher if they could hatch more! They learned a lot about how to take care of chicks, such as how to pet them softly and not be loud. Our school's administrative assistant, Mrs. Hayward, adopted the chicks. Now they are full-grown and lay eggs of their own.

Have you ever been interested in raising chickens like Mrs. Hayward? We first asked her about her experience adopting the chicks. She answered by saying that she adopted them from the kindergarten class. She picked five chicks and then took them home. She transformed her old dog crate into a coop for her chicks. They lived in her house until it was warm enough for them to be outside in June. Then she moved them to her front yard and built them a new, outdoor coop. Spencer and Yogi, Mrs. Hayward's dogs, loved the chickens once they got used to them. The chickens are now producing eggs, and Mrs. Hayward likes to give them to SPV faculty and staff.

The middle school Health and Nutritious Cooking elective with Nurse Danielle sometimes creates dishes with these eggs, such as fried rice.
